Beddit Turns Your Bed Into A Sleep Tracker

Activity trackers that log data from your sleep can be plenty useful for reviewing how much quality rest you actually get every night.   But why not just turn the bed into one big tracking equipment for compiling data on your nightly ritual of slumber?  That’s exactly what Beddit does.

Don’t worry, you won’t have to buy an entirely new mattress or bed frame at all.  Instead, it’s a thin film sensor that’s designed to strap under your bedsheet, immediately turning your existing bed into a 24/7 smart gadget that can perform tracking activities on its occupants.

In a nutshell, Beddit aims “to show you what you’re like in bed.”  Yeah, your ex-girlfriend probably has a few comments about that, too, but Beddit intends to keep the data focused on your sleeping habits, with the eventual goal of helping improve your sleep quality.  The system is based on ballistocardiography (BCG), which measures cardiorespiratory functions, such as tiny movements caused by respiration and heartbeats.  This data is processed into actionable sleep and wellness information, offering you various readings (sleep quality, heart rate, breathing rhythm, movement, sleep stages, snoring, and environmental data) and personalized tips based on your results.

Everything is designed to work passively (no wristbands to wear, no gadgets to turn on), with everything transmitted to your phone via Bluetooth automatically.  That way, you can just hit the bed after a long day and have the information readily accessible from the app when you wake up in the morning.  While the system obviously works best when you sleep alone, it can also compensate when you share the bed with someone (provided you sleep on different sides of the bed), so you can’t use it as an excuse to break up with a crazy girlfriend.  Sorry.
