GoSun Is The Portable Solar Cooker Your Beach Outings And Picnics Have Needed All Along

Harnessing solar power for cooking is something that’s been done before. The GoSun, however, manages to integrate its sun-powered technology in a highly-portable form factor, making it as convenient to bring along as the rest of your camping gear.

Designed for environmentally-friendly cooking, the stove uses nothing but sunlight as its fuel, allowing you to cook a variety of food items, provided the sun is peeking from the sky. Granted, you won’t be able to cook at night or during inclement weather, so it will still be best to have a backup plan in tow (like a small Survival Stove in your pack or something).

The GoSun is as odd-looking as cooking equipment comes. Measuring 2 feet long with a 2.25-inch diameter, it’s clad in the shape of a tube that looks more like a pummeling weapon than a portable stove. To use, simply place your food inside the cylinder-shaped cooking chamber, open the lid wide, and face it towards the sun.   It uses mirrors arranged in a parabolic design to effectively retain heat from 80 to 90 percent of the sunlight it catches, which it uses to cook the food sitting inside. Up to three pounds of food can be cooked at a time, which should be enough to feed up to four individuals.

With the sun shining in its full glory, the GoSun can heat up a batch of hotdogs in 10 minutes, make scrambled eggs in about 20, and stew a couple pounds of pork in 30 minutes to an hour. It can be used for steaming, baking, frying, roasting, and boiling, too, making for a highly-versatile cooking device.

Originally a Kickstarter project, the GoSun is available now, priced at $269.
