Swash: This Appliance Can Dry Clean Your Expensive Suits At Home

If you spend a lot of money getting expensive items of clothing dry cleaned, there’s really not much you can do to cut down on the expense.  You can either wear them dirty or pay for regular cleaning – no options in between.  At least, that was the case before Swash, a dry-cleaning appliance you can use at home.

While it won’t completely replace a professional dry cleaning service, the appliance is designed to minimize the need for them.  It can neutralize odors, remove light wrinkles, and even restore fit after wear without having to visit the nearest dry cleaners, allowing you to save that trip for more drastic chemical-based cleaning needs.

Rather than be referred to as a dry-cleaning machine, Swash terms itself a “refresher,” one that can refresh dresses, suits, sweaters, and other dry-clean only garments.  It measures 51 x 16.5 x 30 inches (h x w x d), with a pull out compartment where you hang the garment you want to clean.  Similar to single-serve coffee machines, it uses single-serve Swash Pods that contain just enough chemical agents to clean a single garment, though, so you’re stuck at “refreshing” only one item at a time (each cleaning takes 10 minutes).  It’s safe to use with many fabrics, including denim, wool, polyester, lycra, cotton, cashmere, sequins, beading, and lace, although you’ll need to keep it away from silk, leather, velvet, suede and fur.  The thing is, literally, plug and play, too, requiring just a wall outlet and a pod to start working.   Construction is galvanized steel.

Bloomingdale’s is currently taking preorders for Swash.  Price is $499.99.
