Gabriel Dishaw’s Junk-Metal Sneaker Sculptures
Motherboards and sneakers are quite the unlikely combination. That’s why these sneaker sculptures, which uses old circuit boards and other throwaway materials to create replicas of popular kicks, look way awesome.
Created by junk-metal artist Gabriel Dishaw, the growing collection now numbers five pieces, with names such as the Air Jordan Colossus, Junk Dunk and Blazer Pentium 1.0 (which should give you a hint about what shoes they’re based on). They’re all made to an exact size of 9.5 inches, although they’re unwearable (you can try, but I’m sure it’s “you break, you buy”).
Each sculpted shoe weighs anywhere from five to 20 pounds, with plenty of details to make them easily identifiable, from accurate stitch patterns to movable shoe tongues and laces. He uses discarded materials – such as wires, staples, bolts, screws, old typewriters and motherboard scraps – to produce every single one. Individual parts are bent into shape and [...]
Michael Johansson’s Objects Subjected Sculptures Should Teach Pack Rats Some Organization Skills
Pack rats of the world could learn a thing or two from Michael Johansson. I’m not sure if it’s his OCD showing, but his latest sculpture collection, called Subjected, looks like the work of a true Tetris master.
Using a cringe-worthy amount of items retrieved from flea markets, Michael organizes the loot into compact piles using downright elite organization skills. The result is a visually-engaging set of art pieces that are both extremely original and highly creative, apart from being unbelievably neat and well-kempt.
From afar, the gorgeous sculptures look like a tightly-compacted heap of trash, with nary a slither of space. Come closer, however, and you’ll begin to make out the awesomeness of its construction.
Otherwise unrelated items, from ancient encyclopedias to old clocks to plastic containers, are hoisted side by side in neat arrangements like a perfectly-filled Tetris rows. Rather than just throw them in a pile, they’re even put up [...]
Sys-Admin Miguel Rivera Salvages Gutted Disks, Turns Them Into Gorgeous Hard Drive Sculptures
Personally, I like my out-of-commission hard drives mangled to death. Not because I keep sensitive information there, far from it. I just really, really like seeing things get bent out of their wits. As long as I’m watching it happen, of course.
Miguel Rivera’s hobby, on the other hand, is a little less severe. In fact, it’s very creative. Rather than shred those piles of useless metal and throw them in a heap, he turns them into beautiful works of art.
His gorgeous hard drive sculptures use nothing but decommissioned storage units, along with the occasional extra computer part (such as cable arms) when necessary, to build his creations. The concept, from the start, was to build metal sculptures using every salvageable part of gutted disks of all models and sizes.
According to the artist, who spends days working as a systems administrator at a US Air [...]
Clayton Bailey’s Life-Size Robot Sculptures Make The Future Look Fun
As much as I am in awe of all the new robots we chance upon these days, I really hope our future android creations look more like steel and aluminum mascots. Even when laden with scary abilities, they’ll at least come across as goofy cartoon sidekicks, instead of threatening Terminators and Robocops. More specifically, I’d like them to look like Clayton Bailey’s robot sculptures, whose life-size bodies resemble a mix of silly cartoons, junk art and a future that looks like a lot of fun.
Even if you haven’t heard of Clayton before, you may have come across various pieces of his work, many of which have been posted online in one form or another. A Professor Emeritus of Ceramics at California State University, the prolific artist boasts a body of work that range from ceramic art to ray guns, not to mention his impressive collection of inanimate robots.
Bailey’s robots are [...]
One-Off Transformers: 13-Inch Omega Supreme Animated Figure
The gigantic Omega Supreme, as depicted from the last animated series, was one of the most important Transformers ever. He also happens to be a widely ignored one, with Hasbro neglecting to fashion a decent action figure for the one that sacrificed his life to end the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons.
As such, it isn’t a surprise that his character has become the fodder for individual hobbyists to try to fashion. Currently being auctioned now on eBay is probably the best of the bunch – a 13.5 x 12 inch animated figurine that looks every bit as accurate as you can imagine an Omega Supreme toy to be.
Apart from staying true to the character’s details, the figure is fully transformable into the ship that the Autobots once traveled in. If that wasn’t enough to build a case for this wonder, it sports light-up eyes, a similarly illuminated command [...]
Your Very Own Semi-Robotic Doppleganger
Want to have your own brainless android twin? I’m not sure how much it will cost to commission your likeness with the Xian Chaoren Sculpture Research Institute in China, but you have to admit, there’s something amazing with their semi-robotic doppelganger creations.
Rated as a Model Company by the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Arts, the company produces simulated silica gel sculptures based on real people, which are touted to feature a level of artistry and craftsmanship that are among the most advanced in the world. Instead of leaving them as stationary figures, the replicas can reportedly even perform a few very basic actions (like moving their eyes).
From the photos, there’s very little to tell the models apart from their real-life counterparts. Hell, I can’t even figure out which is which. They seem to be able to replicate minute details very well, including skin, hair and facial lines. If you found the [...]
