The Avenida Atlantica in Copacabana is about to get a new center attraction that should give the beach area in Rio a much-deserved makeover.  Called the Museum of Image and Sound, the building will come with an odd, zig-zagging form that makes it quite the sight to behold.

Intended to house a collection of multimedia objects and installations, the museum will be filled in by seven floors of varying purposes, along with an outdoor movie theater on the roof.  The building’s spaces will play host to both cultural areas with galleries, an education room and an auditorium, along with entertainment sections, consisting of cafes, bars and restaurants.

The snazzy modern design is from Diller Scofidio + Renfro, whose entry was selected in a competition earlier in the month.  With a wrap-around path that traverses both indoor and outdoor areas, it allows an interconnected walkway that lets visitors enjoy all of the building’s amenities, as well as the gorgeous panoramic view of Copacabana Beach.

If you ever hit Rio in 2011, which is the structure’s scheduled inauguration, make sure to check out the Museum of Image and Sound.  If nothing else, that outdoor, roof-installed movie theater sounds insane, especially with the backdrop of the expansive beach all around it.  Here’s to hoping they never play Barry Manilow’s Copacabana when you do come over for a visit!
