Full HD projectors are great, but if you’re going to blow up your projected images to gigantic screen sizes, things will look a whole lot better if you’ve got a 4K projector instead. The good news? Even 4K projectors are becoming more affordable now, making them a viable option as a TV alternative for many people’s homes. Such is definitely the case with the Optoma UHD55.
A reasonably affordable 4K UHD projector, it boasts true 4K UHD resolution with 8.3 million onscreen pixels, ensuring you can fill the largest screens with a startling amount of detail. It’s feature-packed, too, from support for the latest picture standards and a frame interpolation AI that eliminates blurring to compatibility with all 3D content and 240Hz PC gaming, it delivers a whole lot of big screen entertainment at a fraction of the price of other 4K projectors.
The Optoma UHD55 is a lamp-based DLP projector that can put up a 4K UHD image at screen sizes of up to 300 inches. That’s right, 300 inches, allowing you to have a veritable theater-like screen, so long as you have the space for it at home. It has a claimed contrast ratio of 1.2M:1 and a peak brightness of 3,600 lumens, a combo that, the outfit claims, makes it suitable for lights-on viewing, provided that none of the lights are directed straight onto the projection surface. The projector covers 97 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut, with a built-on color management system that allows you to fine-tune the color settings to your exact liking. There’s even a wall color adjustment that can tailor the color settings based on the color of the wall you’re projecting on.
It doesn’t appear to have support for Dolby Vision, but it is able to accurately display both HDR10 and HLG HDR content, while PureMotion frame interpolation tech eliminates any motion blurring or image judder, even in high-speed action sequences. All sorts of tech that makes using the projector easy is also onboard, such as vertical lens shift, geometric correction (for uneven projection surfaces), corner correction, and keystone correction.
The Optoma UHD55 also comes with a gaming mode that reduces the input lag to under 16 milliseconds in 4K resolution, all while optimizing the contrast and color settings for video game graphics. Do note, it only has an HDMI 2.0 connectivity, so it won’t be able to go past 60Hz frame rates in 4K when hooked up to a PS5 or an Xbox Series console, although it can handle up to 240Hz when hooked up to a PC. There’s also an integrated 10W speaker, in case you want to use it without having to set it up with your existing sound system.
It comes with the Optoma Connect app, where you can set up your virtual assistant for voice commands (it supports Alexa and Google Assistant) and control the projector’s operation. Other features include IFTTT support, full 3D content support, built-in media player (just insert a USB stick with your media in it), dual HDMI inputs, and a built-in app marketplace.
