It’s not the first portable projector we’ve seen. Sony’s LSPX-P1, however, just might offer the most desirable performance, with its ability to beam clear images onto any vertical or horizontal surface while requiring no more than a couple inches of distance.

A compact projector, it measures 3.25 x 5.25 x 5.25 inches (width x height x depth) and weighs just a smidgen over two pounds, ensuring you can throw it in a backpack pouch without any problems. Despite that, the darn thing comes with a good load of features that should make it a viable projector even for the living room.

The Sony LSPX-P1 can beam 720p images between 22 and 80 inches in size, even at distances as short as the tabletop right below where it’s set down. It uses a motor-driven LCD shutter projection system that boasts a 4,000:1 contrast ratio for some satisfying picture quality, with a pair of 1-inch Bass Reflex speakers delivering big sound despite the compact size. A perforated design provides added cooling, requiring minimal effort (and noise) from the onboard fan, with the onboard battery keeping it running for up to two hours in a single charge (yeah, better have a power bank on standby).

It comes with wireless HDMI for streaming content from your video sources, with onboard 4GB storage for storing images you want to play. You can control the projector via the accompanying app.

Available now, the Sony LSPX-P1 is priced at $1,200.
