From smartphones and DSLRs to webcams and action cams, you can use most any modern digital camera for livestreaming. With the big growth of the livestreaming space, though, we’re increasingly seeing more and more specialized streaming webcams, such as Logitech’s Mevo line, which can shoot video and stream it online without needing to be hooked up to a computer. The Logitech Mevo Core is the newest addition to the outfit’s lineup.
As with the outfit’s previous release, the camera is aimed at non-technical users (e.g. churches and youth sport teams), allowing you to broadcast directly without having to install a bunch of software on your PC. This time around, though, they’re leveling up the quality, bringing 4K capture, swappable lenses, and other more premium camera features.
The Logitech Mevo Core is equipped with an 8.3-megapixel 4/3 CMOS sensor, which is commonly used in mirrorless cameras, making this a big step above the small sensor of the outfit’s last release from four years ago. When used for recording, it can shoot 4K video at 30 fps, so you can use it to capture some high-res footage. For streaming, though, it limits the quality to 1080p at 30 fps. We don’t know if it allows cropping of 4K video for streaming at 1080p, but we definitely hope it can do that, so you can digitally zoom into subjects without producing grainy footage.
As with their previous camera, the device can stream directly to livestreaming services, essentially simplifying the route for broadcasting online. As of now, it can broadcast directly to Twitch, YouTube, Facebook Live, X, Sideline HD, Vimeo Livestream, Linkedin, and Gamechanger, all while also working as a webcam for videoconferencing platforms. It does have an HDMI output, though, which lets you transmit the lossless footage to a computer or an external recorder.
The Logitech Mevo Core has a micro four thirds lens mount, so you can use it with any lenses from OM System or Panasonic, ensuring this can deliver more professional-looking videos with the right lens in tow. Of course, it’s strange that they’re adding interchangeable lenses to a camera looking to simplify things for less tech-savvy users, but it’s nice to have the flexibility available. There’s also no lens included with the camera body, by the way, so you are going to have to pick something up to actually use the camera, which is why they’re looking to offer lens kit bundles down the line.
It has three built-in MEMS microphones, along with two modes of spatial audio processing, one for speech and one for music, which should help make the whole livestreaming process a whole lot easier. Basically, it can capture video and audio with no need for additional accessories, although it does have a TRS audio input, in case you want to plug in an external mic. Other features include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.1, a microSD card slot (UHC class U3 speed), and a built-in replaceable battery rated at six hours of 1080p streaming or 4K recording.
