Radlight Makes Starting Fires Easier in Harsh, Wet, Sub-Zero Weather

Those cheap Bic lighters are nice and all, but if you want a lighter you can rely on in the outdoors, you might want to look for something less disposable. Take for instance the Radlight, a rugged lighter that’s designed to help you thrive in the harshest backcountry conditions.

A weatherproof lighter, it’s designed to let you light fires quickly through rain, snow, and extreme cold weather, making your fire-starting activities in the backcountry just a little easier. Whether you’re burning logs on the fire pit for warmth, lighting a candle for illumination, or torching up some twigs for your survival stove, this thing lets you get that started without any hassles.

The Radlight is an oversized lighter, allowing it to accommodate a larger tank, so yo can have just a bit more fuel on tap for whatever challenges you encounter during your outdoor adventures. It’s built rugged, with an aluminum outer chassis and a stainless steel insert, ensuring it holds up to any roughhousing it’s going to encounter in the outdoors. Yeah, there’s none of that cheap plastic here that can crack or break during accidental drops on hard, rocky ground. The flint wheel and the hood are covered up, too, requiring you to flip the rotating lid open before using.

Instead of the flame rising upwards, which makes lighting a fire near the ground very difficult (and often hazardous to your thumb), it comes out through the side, allowing you to comfortably hold the lighter across its ridged body, regardless of what you’re lighting up. Heck, the neck is even extendable for lighting up inside hard-to-reach places. It has a large flint wheel that can be operated even with thick gloves on, allowing you to spark a flame without having to take off your gloves first. The wheel is positioned opposite where the flame comes out, too, eliminating any chances of getting your thumb burned, with no valve that needs to be pressed like standard disposables, so the flame will just keep going. To turn the flame off, just flip the lid back in place.

The Radlight is fully weatherproof, so you can easily spark a flame even in the face of hard rain, strong winds, and snow. That’s right, the thing will still light up even if you use it in the middle of harsh rain and wind. While it won’t create a flame if you submerge it in water, it should be able to light up immediately as soon as you take it out, open the lid, and turn the spark wheel, so it’s very convenient to use outdoors.

Instead of using butane, the lighter uses naphta fuel, which is the same one used in classic Zippo lighters. Why naphta? According to the outfit, it’s a lot more reliable in cold weather, with its ability to work at temperatures down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. In case you’re having trouble using the lighter in high elevation, by the way, there’s a pressure relief valve on the top right corner that you can loosen to normalize the internal pressure and allow you to turn the flint wheel normally.

The Radlight is available now, priced at $59.
