Kids going on wild adventures has always been great fodder for movies. The Goonies, released in 1985, is one of the most popular films ever in this vein, as it follows a group of kids on a quest to find a legendary pirate treasure. The LEGO Ideas The Goonies set brings that classic film to life by allowing you to recreate One-Eyed Willy’s stranded pirate ship and all the treasure it hides inside.
That’s right, LEGO has another pirate ship set, making this a potentially a great addition to folks who love other pirate-themed models like the Going Merry Pirate Ship and Jack Sparrow’s Black Pearl. Of course, this one’s far from seaworthy, as it depicts the long-lost Inferno pirate ship from the cult classic film that carries all the wealth that One-Eyed Willy has plundered through his reign over the seas.

The LEGO Ideas The Goonies is a model of the Inferno pirate ship, similar to how its depicted at the end of the film. Instead of merely recreating the ship, though, they turned it into a vibrant diorama, with the lower decks outfitted to depict various scenes you will find throughout the movie. They took some creative liberties here, of course, as some of these scenes don’t actually take place inside the ship. However, incorporating them into the ship does make it a much grander homage to the cult classic film, making for an overall more interesting model.
What scenes do they incorporate into the diorama? Well, there’s Willy’s treasure room, of course, which is the whole reason the gang went into this adventure in the first place. They also recreate the secret fireplace entrance that leads to the caves, the abandoned restaurant the Fratellis use as their criminal hideout, and even Sloth’s dungeon, where he spends his days watching pirate movies, eating chocolate, and living an imaginative existence.

The LEGO Ideas The Goonies also recreates some of the more memorable traps, which is a common trope in treasure hunts, from the film. There’s the falling boulders you can activate by flipping a switch, the secret trap door that caused Data to fall into the pit (where he is saved by his Pinchers of Peril contraption), and the Skeleton organ that Andy had to play correctly to ensure the gang’s safety. They even put in what’s supposed to be a slide that leads to an octopus, which is supposedly a deleted scene from the theatrical release.

All the diorama elements are only viewable from one side of the ship, by the way, so you can just face the ship the opposite direction if you just want to showcase the actual pirate ship for your display shelf. The set comes with a dozen minifigures, consisting of the kids (Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen, Clark “Mouth” Devereaux, Richard “Data” Wang, Mike “Mikey” Walsh, Andrea “Andy” Carmichael, Stephanie “Stef” Steinbrenner, and Brandon “Brand” Walsh), the four Fratelli family members chasing after them (including Sloth), and even One-Eyed Willy himself. A total of 2,912 pieces are included, with the finished model measuring 24.5 x 14 x 7 inches (length x height x width).
The LEGO Ideas The Goonies is available now, priced at $329.99.
