Sure, there are solutions out there that enable flat-packing your bicycle for easy transport. The Sandwichbike, though, is an entirely new bicycle designed from the ground up to facilitate both flat-packing and quick assembly.
Designed by Basten Leijh, the bike is shipped flat-packed with 52 individual parts, along with the accompanying tools needed to put everything together. Everything fits in a box measuring 37 x 27.6 x 9.4 inches, making for a reasonably-sized package you can carry and transport without much problems.
Once put together (estimated assembly time is 45 minutes), the Sandwichbike measures a rather standard 69 x 24 x 37 inches, allowing it to comfortably accommodate riders between 5’3” and 6’6” in height. Appearance, though, is anything but standard, with an eye-catching wooden frame and fork (weather-coated beech plywood) that’s guaranteed to draw people’s attention and generate instant conversations. The frame and fork are particularly notable for their use of four separate wooden panels (for easier flat-packing) that are then held together by a custom-milled set of aluminum cylinders. Features include Shimano single-speed coaster brakes, a stainless steel chain, 14G stainless steel spokes, and Schwalbe 26-inch Big Apple tires.
The Sandwichbike is now available, priced at €799. European orders ship starting December 1, with worldwide shipping commencing in January.
