Okhotsk Blue Draft Is Beer Made From Melted Icebergs
One of the benefits of global warming and the ice caps melting is that the Japanese get to enjoy really good beer. Why let all that icy water go to waste, after all?
The Okhotsk Blue Draft is one of the most unique beers around, counting a couple of unusual ingredients into its mix. Chief among its odd sources is water from melted icebergs that float to the Hokkaido beaches from the Sea of Okhotsk, an area in the Pacific Ocean near both Japan and Russia.
The soothing blue color, of course, isn't because of the sea water. I think you have to be in third grade to still believe that. Instead, Abashiri Brewery achieved the attractive hue by adding blue seaweed into the mix.
Will ice water from the sea really make beer better? I doubt it. Although, that sure makes drinking a bottle a heck of a lot cooler. I can just see myself downing this at the bar, regaling my friends about how the brewer has to wait out in the ocean to encounter a melting iceberg and scoop it as it falls down the surface of the water. None of which is true, by the way.
Okhotsk Blue Draft joins the manufacturer's growing line of colored brewskies, which include the Hamanasu Red Draft and Shiretoko Green Draft.

I don’t really think that this beer will be much different from others. Most of the beers taste same, the ones which taste different are either very good or very bad. An example of bad beer is Fosters and i hope this just not another ice’d Foster hehe
This is one ice’d up beer! They’ve even put seaweed in it for making it blue. I’m not sure how this beer would taste, I hope its just tastes like beer and not some other drink.
Katrina, you might not think beers taste different, but I and a few hundred thousand people disagree with you. Beer brewing, like cooking, is an art. While i don’t know how this beer will taste, it is an interesting take (I’ve never had seaweed beer) and I hope that some distributor in the states can get it here so i can try it. Please don’t try to impose your narrow outlook on others, thank you!

there is no sea water in it. icebergs are fresh water, thus why they are icebergs. salt water does not freeze in the oceans that i know of.
Except for Yona Yona, all Japanese beer pretty much sucks. And every time they roll out a new one, it’s more of the same suckiness. I’ve no doubt this beer is just as boring as Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo.
